Today, #thehouseintheceruleansea has over 3.9 million views on TikTok, over 22,000 dedicated posts on Instagram, and a staggering 4.45 average rating across over 292,000 reviews on Goodreads. I recently picked it up again to revisit the comfort of the magical house in the Cerulean Sea and fondly discovered once more why it comes so highly recommended by readers on TikTok. I read this book for the first time in the early weeks of the pandemic, just after it was published, and found the sweet story to be a simply enjoyable read. But when TJ Klune's "The House in the Cerulean Sea" was first published in 2020, I seemed to be seeing the book everywhere and couldn't resist picking it up for myself. I don't read fantasy novels often, usually finding it too challenging to keep track of magic rules, fantastical species, and complicated worlds. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Grass by sheri s tepper![]() ![]() The spread of a seemingly incurable plague across human settlements throughout known space prompts the authoritarian religious rulers of humanity, Sanctity, to send investigators to Grass, the only place the plague does not seem to have affected, in the hope of finding a cure. Partially as a result of this, the human race has spread out across the galaxy and populated new worlds. In the distant future Terra (Earth) has become massively over-populated and its resources overstretched. Grass is so named because almost its entire surface is covered in multi-coloured prairie. Much of the novel centers on the cosmic anomaly Grass, the only planet immune to a galaxy-wide plague. ![]() Interest in the novel continued, and it was included in the SF Masterworks classic science fiction paperback collection in 2002. Styled as an ecological mystery, Grass presents one of Tepper's earliest and perhaps most radical statements on themes that would come to dominate her fiction, in which despoliation of the planet is explicitly linked to gender and social inequalities.Ĭonsidered to be among her best works and hailed as "a splendid achievement, one of the most satisfying science fiction novels I have read in years" by New York Times Book critic Gerald Jones at the time of its publication, Grass was nominated for both the Hugo and Locus award in 1990. ![]() Tepper and the first novel from the Arbai trilogy. A considerable time has passed since the first humans set foot on Pax, learning to adapt and share this strange and wonderous new world with its native fauna and flora. In fact, even though the series has been marketed as a duology, this second book, Interference, can technically be read on its own, but having the background knowledge from Semiosis will help a lot. But because I enjoyed myself so much, I certainly wasn’t going to complain about a chance to return to Pax, the alien planet on which these books take place-not even when I discovered the story will be set some two hundred years after the first novel and follow a new group of explorers from Earth. I had felt the book ended in a good place, with a satisfying conclusion that capped off a multi-generational narrative in the best way possible. ![]() To be honest, I was a little surprised when I found out Semiosis was getting a sequel. So if you are looking for mindless action this is a fun read for you. I might have had a better experience if i fell in love with one of the MCs but truth be told i hated them all (Lucy the most, Will the least) more then the "villains". I didn't relate to anyone so i can make excuses for him/her and for that matter I found the secondary characters more explored (in psych and background story) than the MCs. >< Everyone is labeled (Slut, Geek, Nerd, Freak.) and discriminated because of it and their behavior just made me cringe around the book. Every single character is either chauvinist or feminist. I finish it and i realize that this is by far the most shallow book i'v ever read!ĭon't get me wrong there is a lot of action and the pace is pretty decent so it keeps you reading and it's a fine book, it is!
